Chapter Sixteen

The boarders were due back on Sunday ready for the new school term and as hostel manager, Logan’s presence was required on site. The little family made the trip back to Hamilton with heavy hearts the day before. Even Phoenix was grotty and whinged for most of the journey. Hana screwed her face up. “I don’t know what’s wrong with her, Loge. The car normally puts her to sleep.” She leaned forward and stroked the puckered face next to her, crooning whispered words of comfort.

Logan watched his wife in the rear view mirror as he pressed the code into the keypad at the back gate. His girls were his priority and if Hana even started looking uncomfortable at the staff unit, he fully intended to get her out of there, even if it meant jacking in his job.

Logan pulled over to the side of the small road and went back to open the gate for Tama, who followed behind in his ute. The younger man rolled down his driver’s window and nodded to his uncle as he passed, turning into the lane between the staff houses. Logan climbed back into the car and smiled back at Hana. “It’s weird with nobody here, isn’t it? Pity the boys have to come back.”

“If they didn’t, it wouldn’t be a school, idiot!” Hana shook her head and watched through the window, concentrating on dispelling the misery blossoming in her heart at the sight of the end staff unit coming into view. “I’m glad Tama’s here,” she said softly. “I forgot he had his own key.”

The front door was wide open as Logan parked behind Tama’s vehicle, squeezing into the small space allocated to the two bedroom home. Tama stood on the front steps, talking on his mobile phone. He turned away as Logan put the handbrake on and seemed to be arguing with someone. “Oh well, here we are baby. Back to the shoebox.” With a huge sigh, Hana climbed out and walked around to the boot. Just being on site made exhaustion wrap itself around her throat. “Can we just get unloaded please guys, before Phoe starts grizzling again?” she called, looking each of the men in turn. Tama ignored her.

“Yup, coming.” Logan pressed the button inside the cab to activate the back door and Hana hauled the nearest suitcase towards her.

“No, no!” Tama called with an urgent tone in his voice.

“Hana! Don’t be stupid!” Logan arrived next to her, his eyes flashing in irritation. “How is lifting a heavy suitcase gonna help your...thing?” He waved his hand towards her collar bone and Hana bridled.

“I’m not an invalid!” she snapped.

“Yes you are!” Logan smirked. “So behave.”

Tama slammed the front door of the unit with a bang and ran down the steps, holding out his hand in front of him. Logan picked up on his angst and put a restraining hand on Hana’s arm. “Oh not you as well!” she groaned, glaring at Tama’s hurried approach. “I won’t break!”

“No, it’s not that!” Tama’s grey eyes were wide as he sent out a silent appeal to Logan.
